Description
This version of The Jungle Book was originally written for a professional company who staged the show with just 6 adults and 6 children. The production ran for 50 performances at The Bryanston Arts Centre and The Gardner Arts Centre in 1995/6. However, companies wanting to use a much larger cast can do so: there is plenty of chorus work for the wolves and the monkeys, and no fewer than 22 speaking parts. The show was recently staged by a school with over 150 children!
This adaptation follows the story of Mowgli, who is brought up by a pack of wolves and is taught the laws of the jungle by his dear friend, Baloo the bear. A particular feature of the show is the audience participation, but the strong plot is not ignored and the element of danger is never far away: Shere Khan has made a vow that he will kill the man-cub before he grows up and The Chief Monkey threatens to eat Mowgli for breakfast for refusing to explain the mystery of fire to him!
Minimum cast size (with most cast members playing several parts): 6 adults and 6 children. But the show works very well with a larger cast.
Number of individual speaking parts: 22
Suitable for: Professional companies; Amateur companies; Schools
Running time: Approx. 1 hour 45 minutes
